Abstract

Occupational therapy students, practitioners, educators, and researchers can face ethical challenges every day. Ethical dilemmas arise during the educational preparation toward becoming a clinician and continue throughout all areas of practice. Upholding ethical conduct is difficult and requires practical guidance to help determine an appropriate course of action.

Lifelong ethical education is an important part of becoming and remaining an ethical occupational therapy practitioner. Aligned with the Occupational Therapy Code of Ethics, this comprehensive text analyzes the Code’s six Principles in detail and then applies them across occupational therapy practice areas. It describes ways to approach ethical dilemmas using a Decision Table and illustrates solutions with real-world case studies and vignettes. Readers are guided thoughtfully through analyses of various courses of action to deepen their understanding of ethical practice and the ways it can be compromised. Reflective questions in each chapter help promote thoughtful and ethical practice and are valuable for use in the classroom, in occupational therapy study groups, and for personal use.
