Abstract

Driving and community mobility occupy a central place in the lives of older adults and their families and friends. These skills are particularly valuable as occupational enablers because they facilitate participation in other IADLs, education, work, play, leisure, and social activities. The changes that take place during aging, however, may result in challenges to older adults' ability to drive or otherwise navigate the community. Therefore, occupational therapy practitioners need to address driving and community mobility with aging clients.

This Practice Guideline provides an overview of the occupational therapy process for adults whose driving and community mobility have been affected by various age-related conditions. Topics include evaluation and behind-the-wheel assessment, client interventions, technology- and vehicle-based interventions, and policy interventions. Special attention is given to assessment considerations for people with Alzheimer's disease.
