Abstract
School accountability has become a fundamental aspect of education policy. Education law mandates rigorous academic standards, measuring student progress against these standards, and establishing consequences for the outcomes. Occupational therapy practitioners are held accountable for their services in schools, and documentation provides a trail of data that supports it.
When documentation provides quantitative data, an education team can determine the significance of a problem and monitor change with instruction or intervention. When a student’s performance is compared to expectations on the basis of school policy, curricula standards, teacher expectations, or peer performance, discrepancy in a student’s performance can be measured for decision making. Simple but effective documentation allows occupational therapy practitioners to efficiently use their professional judgment.
