8 Monique Chabot, OTD, OTR/L, CLIPP, CAPS Thomas Jefferson University Philadelphia, Pennsylvania Charismatic Innovator Serving Individuals and Communities Dr. Monique Chabot is an assistant professor at Thomas Jefferson University (Philadelphia University + Thomas Jefferson University). Dr. Chabot is dedicated to serving the local and international community through interprofessional partnerships. Specifically, she collaborates with various design faculty, ranging from landscape architecture, architecture, interior design, industrial design, and graphic design, all while advocating for the value of occupational therapy within design work. These projects solve real world problems and involve design and occupational therapy students. In addition, Dr. Chabot utilizes her program development course to inspire students to serve underserved communities. Implemented programs address a variety of needs in the community, ranging from advocacy for people with disabilities within public transit and sensory spaces to ongoing relationships with an older adult organization to support aging in place. She also leads and or- ganizes a Fieldwork I experience to Morocco to influence students’ understand- ing of culture and disability across the lifespan. In her clinical work, Dr. Chabot works to support aging in place through home modifications and publications on smart technology for aging in place. She owns a home modifications business and works with Habitat for Humanity on the CAPABLE project and a construction standards task force. Kelly Mahler, MS, OTR/L Mahler Occupational Therapy Hershey, Pennsylvania Innovator of Interoceptive Approaches in Occupational Therapy Ms. Kelly Mahler earned an MS in Occupational Therapy as well as a Post-Pro- fessional Pediatric Certificate from Misericordia University, Dallas, PA. She is currently a doctoral student at Misericordia University. Ms. Mahler has been an occupational therapist for 17 years, serving school-aged children and adults. Ms. Mahler is an adjunct faculty member in the Department of Occupational Therapy at Elizabethtown College, Elizabethtown, PA as well as in the Department of Occupational Therapy at Misericordia University. She is co-investigator on multiple research projects and an international speaker pertaining to topics such as interoception, sensory processing, trauma and autism. Erin Muston-Firsch, MS, OTR/L Craig Hospital Englewood, Colorado Meaningful Leadership, Collaboration, Teaching, and Social Impact Ms. Erin Muston-Firsch is an occupational therapist at Craig Hospital’s Assistive Technology Lab in Denver, Colorado. Specializing in assistive technology for in- dividuals with brain and/or spinal cord injuries, Ms. Muston-Firsch established the Craig Adaptive Gaming Program in 2016 to support her patients’ ability to
9 pursue video gaming as a part of their rehabilitation. As a result of this work, Ms. Muston-Firsch collaborated with Microsoft to help in the design and beta testing of the Xbox Adaptive Controller, a first party, customizable game controller for people with disabilities. Her contributions were so informative, that she was in- vited to be a part of the official announcement of the Xbox Adaptive Controller in May 2018. Since that time, she continues to be an advocate for accessibility and inclusion, speaking at multiple conferences including South By Southwest and the Game Developer’s Conference. Most recently, she participated in the annual Microsoft Hack4Good, partnering with Microsoft to design an accessibility tool for an ALYN Children’s Hospital in Israel. A longtime AOTA member, Ms.Mus- ton-Firsch has previously participated in the Emerging Leaders Development Program and currently serves as the Technology Coordinator for the Work and Industry Special Interest Section. International Service Award Said Nafai, OTD, OTR/L, CLT American International College Springfield, Massachusetts Father of Occupational Therapy in Morocco Dr. Said Nafai was born and raised in Morocco. He earned his associate degree in occupational therapy (OT) from Quinsigamond Community College, his masters’ degree from Salem State University, and his doctorate degree from Boston University. He is an OT professor at American International College in Massachusetts. After establishing the Occupational Therapy Association of Morocco (OTAM) and the first OT bachelors’ education program, he is considered the “Father of Occupational Therapy in Morocco”. Dr. Nafai speaks four languages and is the president of OTAM and chairs the annual conference that hosts occupational therapists from around the world to bring an international dimension to OT in Morocco. Dr. Nafai is the Moroccan delegate to the World Federation of Occupational Ther- apists (WFOT) and President of the Arab Occupational Therapy Regional Group (AOTRG) at WFOT. In collaboration with WFOT, he volunteers his expertise to countries to help establish OT education and practice where the profession is developing. Dr. Nafai presents and promotes the distinct value of OT internation- ally, he is a member of the World Health Organization (WHO) GATE Team that aims to improve access to assistive technology worldwide, and he was invited to WHO headquarters in Switzerland in 2017 and 2019. Janet Njelesani, PhD, OTR/L New York University New York, New York Bridging Occupational Therapy and International Development Dr. Janet Njelesani, Assistant Professor, NYU Department of Occupational Therapy, has dedicated her career to challenging the exclusion of children with disabilities from the international development agenda.
